The Miracles of Plant Medicine & Plant Based Skincare

Posted by Elise Muller on

I recently had an accident while riding my bike which led to a deeper understanding of medicinal plants.   Long story short: I swerved to miss someone, hit a glitch in the sidewalk and bounced against a tree with razor-like bark.  The bark sliced my arm so quickly and deeply that I had to get off my bike to cut my skirt and make a bandage.  Although my arm bled profusely, what particularly freaked me out was I could see inside of my arm ( I don’t like to see inside of my arm).   I peddled home and washed...

Wildlife & Weeds

I am of an age where I understand the importance of reflecting on my life - the times I've been blessed, the times I've been protected from oblivious choices and actions.  As I grow older and (hopefully) gain wisdom, I'm awed by the amount of times that I've been protected and times I've been blessed with the people and places that have shaped me.  Although I could write volumnes on these encounters, for now I speak of this wildness, the land that has encouraged me to become quiet, to observe. It's been a gift to live alongside meadows, woodlands, mountain...

Rose Petals and "Fresh From The Garden"

Posted by Elise Muller on

I am always pleasantly surprised to discover articles touting the benefits of pure, natural botanicals used as skincare ingredients.  It is an additional pleasure knowing that my formulas have incorporated these precious botanicals for over 20 years, long before they were accepted as “relevant” by the industry.  It continues to be my belief “everything we need for our beauty regime can be found in nature”. When I first began to formulate Botanical skincare women ran from my table “aghast” at the thought of placing a pure substance on their skin.  (At the time the “beauty industry” adhered to chemicals and...

Floral Hydrosols

Through the kindness and grace of an exceptional distiller, I am once again offering her exquisite hydrosols.  Although these precious “waters” have not been a good seller at Mountain Spirit Botanicals, personally speaking, “I cannot live without them”. Although hydrosols are usually “the by-product” of plant material that has been distilled for its essential oil, what makes these hydrosols unique is the plant material has been distilled specifically for the hydrosol.  These plants (cultivated on 280 acres of certified organic forest, grasslands and garden) are distilled only once per year.   A heart-felt endeavor to be sure … Due to limited...

Bird-Song and Gardens

Posted by 1 on

What I am particularly struck by in this season is bird-songs and “the call of the wild.”  For days the sounds of Nature have not stilled.  Wild Turkey are shouting from the gully; Tree Frogs are singing; Crickets are doing I don’t know what, and somewhere in the distance “peepers” have joined the chorus. It’s twilight as I write; the meadow and woodlands are filled with ancient songs.  This wildness encourages me to be still, cease all that I am “doing” and just listen, imagine what all is going on out there.  These same songs fill the early mornings when...
